Stephen Sherrard Portrait

Hello, I'm Stephen, or Steve,

I'm a wildlife, nature, and travel photographer based in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. My journey into photography began in the late 1970s with a Kodak Instamatic. I won many awards for my work in my high school years, and continued to explore the world of photography ever since.

Today, my work spans from the intimate portraits of our own backyard hummingbirds to the grand landscapes and wildlife of destinations around the globe. Whether I'm photographing a visiting Rufous hummingbird in our backyard garden or tracking exotic wildlife on Safari in Africa, my goal remains the same: to capture authentic moments that reveal the beauty and character of my subjects.

My Approach

Photography is my passion, not my profession.

I believe in patience and observation. The best wildlife photographs come from understanding your subject's behavior and being ready when that perfect moment arrives. I prefer natural light and natural settings, whenever possible.

My equipment evolves with technology, but my philosophy stays constant: respect for wildlife always comes first, followed by the pursuit of images that tell a story and evoke emotion.

Projects

In addition to this portfolio, I run Backyard Hummingbirds, a project dedicated to documenting and sharing the fascinating world of hummingbirds in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. You can follow along on Instagram and YouTube.
